Gutter Clean-Out and Window Cleaning: A Seasonal Guide for South Carolina Homes

By Matthew Caldwell · September 20, 2026

Roof gutter cleared of leaves and debris

Gutters and windows are two of the first things to get ignored and two of the most noticeable when they are dirty. Overflowing gutters stain siding and send water where it should not go, and cloudy windows make a freshly washed house look tired. In Lexington, Columbia and around Lake Murray, pine needles, pollen and humidity make both jobs come up often.

Here is a simple seasonal guide.

Why gutters matter

Gutters carry rain off the roof and away from your home. When they clog, water spills over the edge and runs down the siding, pools near the foundation and can soak fascia and soffits. In our climate, standing water and debris in a gutter also grows algae and mildew and can attract insects.

Homes under pines and oaks get the worst of it. Needles, leaves, seeds and shingle grit pack the gutters, and spring pollen turns the mix into sludge.

Signs your gutters need cleaning

  1. Water spilling over the edge during rain
  2. Streaks or dark stains on the siding below the gutter
  3. Plants growing in the gutter
  4. Sagging or pulling-away sections
  5. Standing water or dripping after the rain has stopped
  6. Pine needles or leaves piled at downspouts

How often to clean gutters

  • Homes under pines or oaks: at least once a year, and sometimes twice.
  • Homes with fewer trees: once a year is usually enough.
  • Homes with gutter guards: guards help, but they still need checking and occasional cleaning.

A good rule is to clean after the heavy leaf and needle drop in fall, and again in late winter or spring before pollen and heavy rain. See our gutter clean-out service.

Why windows need regular cleaning too

Windows collect pollen, dust, hard water spots and the film that rinses off a house wash. Dirty glass is more noticeable than most people expect, especially on homes with lake views, where the whole point is the view.

Dirty windows can also:

  • Dull the curb appeal of a clean house
  • Show up in listing photos
  • Make rooms feel darker

See our window cleaning service.

How often to clean windows

  • Most homes: once or twice a year.
  • Lake-view homes or storefronts: more often if clear glass matters.
  • After a house wash: always. Windows are the last step, because washing siding sends water over the glass.

A seasonal schedule for Midlands homes

Season Gutters Windows
Late winter Clear winter debris before spring rain Optional quick clean
Spring (after pollen) Check again after pollen and seed drop Clean for the season
Summer Check after storms Spot clean if needed
Fall Clean after leaves and needles drop Clean before holidays

Pair this with your exterior wash. See how often to wash your house in SC.

Order matters: the right sequence

If you are doing several things at once, this order gives the best result:

  1. Gutters first, so debris and dirty water do not undo your work.
  2. Roof next, if it needs a soft wash, since runoff lands in the gutters and on the siding.
  3. House washing, top to bottom.
  4. Driveway, walks and decks.
  5. Windows last, to clean off any residue.

Our roof soft washing and house washing pages explain those steps.

Safety: ladders are risky

Cleaning gutters and windows means working at height. Ladder falls cause many injuries every year. If your home is two stories, the ground is soft or sloped, or you are not comfortable on a ladder, hire it out. Avoid working near power lines and never lean a ladder on the gutter itself.

Gutters and the roof

Roof runoff loads gutters with granules and grime, and algae on a roof sheds into them. If you plan a roof wash, have the gutters cleaned at the same time so the cleaned roof does not wash new debris into clean gutters. Also avoid pressure washing your own roof, which can strip shingle granules and clog gutters with them.

What we do not do

We clean gutters. We do not repair or replace them. If we notice loose, leaking or sagging sections, we will point them out so you can have them repaired.

Questions we hear

Do I need gutter guards? They can reduce how often you clean, but they are not maintenance free. Tell us what you have when you request a quote.

Can you clean the inside of my windows? Our focus is exterior glass. Ask when you request a quote and we will let you know.

What causes the white spots on my windows? Often hard water, such as from sprinklers. Light spotting often cleans up. Heavy or etched spotting may only improve.

Can I bundle gutters, windows and a house wash? Yes. We can quote them together as one visit.

Key takeaways

  • Homes under pines and oaks usually need gutters cleaned at least once a year.
  • Overflowing gutters stain siding and let water collect where it should not.
  • Clean windows last, after the house wash, so they stay clean.
  • Ladder work is risky. Hire it out if your home is tall or the ground is uneven.
  • Bundling gutters, windows and a house wash into one visit keeps the result fresh.
